Virginia Senate Votes to Raise Reckless Driving Speed

Senate Bill 768, sponsored by Sen. David R. Suetterlein, R-Roanoke County, advanced past the Senate this week bringing Virginia one step closer to raising the reckless limit to 85 mph. The current law categorizes the class 1 misdemeanor as any speed 20 mph over the limit or any speed over 80 mph. SB 768 seeks to raise the latter part of the law to 85 mph, which would save many in rural counties from the dreaded 81/70 reckless driving charge.

The bill has been referred to the Transportation Committee where its fate will be decided.
